A Quick Note on Community
As humans we are a social creature, and this is opposed by the fact that we breed sexually. As a social creature we look for a sense of belonging amongst like minded people. We look to fit in, and feel like we offer value, as well as receive value from the group. As a species which breeds sexually we promote diversity with each unique flavor in our generations.
It is therefore important that we strive to tolerate perspectives in an effort to gain communally from the advantages our diversity bring us. It is important that we do this within the parameters of what we believe to be morally acceptable.
Many valid paths exist in our lives, and just as you may have read in the fictional Gorean series we are diverse, individually as well as amongst different societies or cities. Many of these are slight differences. However they are attacked and hounded upon over negligble differences at times.
I ask of you men to truly comprehend the what, and why behind differences before passing judgment on differences so that we as a community can tolerate diversity in our expressions of self, so long as these tolerances do not compromise the morality threshold we are willing to accept. I do not ask to give way to who you are, and I know we can all afford to give slightly to another and still keep the sanctity of Gorean Philosophy.
I love you all,
~Thalin

The Gorean Tavern
Some Basics
The channels which are devoted to Gorean beliefs vary based on a few different expressions and themes. Some of those are whether they are mainly "role playing" rooms verses discussion rooms, or based on differentiating themes/protocols of behavior.
For example you may find that some channels will role play to the extent of expressing what serving a drink may look like through the mind of another while they type out the actions in a descriptive manner. Some channels may role play fight scenes.
The #GoreanTavern does allow for some visually descriptive role play up to the point where people may offer some expressions of how they would see themselves in such an environment. It does not afford the acknowledgment of turning the Gorean philosophy into an institution of gaming.
We are fairly friendly folk, and stopping in to gain an idea if you fit in is always a better suggestion than hearing about a place. If it is not what you are looking for there are a few other channels which may be. If you are new to Gor and are unsure what to expect, then you are welcome to stop in and offer anyone present the respect of knowing you are new. From there you should receive the treatment you would expect as a visitor.
Expectations
The first thing that comes to mind is a request to all to keep conversation of ill will towards others out of the tavern. We do not speak of others in negative connotations as often as we can help it. This helps to drive a specific atmosphere that we are looking for.
There is sense in offering who you are as you express yourself to the world. When you do express who you are, you find people who wish to be present in the company of you and who does not wish to. By presenting something different you may miss out on phenomenal and long-lasting friendships or gain the company of those you just can not stand to be around. In any offer you choose, I can promise you as the Tavern owner I will offer you truly who I am.

Atmosphere - the look and feel of the Tavern
The Tavern runs much like a tavern. You may see wenches serving, discussions going on and even the occasional girl thrown up on the bar to sing ad hoc, when tossed topics!
We tend to have a lot of fun and keep things light hearted unless we are heavily engaged in some philosophical discussion which will no doubt have several tangential lines of thought.
How OPs/Voice and such are handled
Those who run the tavern can be recognized by the following:
-
Men are given channel administrative status (& prefix)
-
Women are given channel operator status (@ prefix)
-
Property are recognized with the tag of {Tavern}
Guests of the Tavern can expect the following:
-
Men are given channel operator status (@ prefix)
-
Women are given channel voice status (+ prefix)
-
Property are still recognized with the tag of {Tavern} ;)
Failing to have good judgment in use of what is offered will most likely offer us a chance for conversation.
Abuse or showing complete incompetence in your ability for wise choice will not alter these status delineations. You will simply be asked not to return.
-
We do not recognize unowned people as slaves. We do not distinguish a feeling to express non-dominant behavior as reason to consider someone a slave.
Some food for thought on this topic can be found here:
The paradox of "unowned slaves"
-
The Tavern girls will from time to time make you aware they are available. They will not necessarily approach, especially when there are a good number of people or discussion is going on. It is not appropriate to needlessly interrupt good discussion of the free with someone walking up to each and every person trying to have a conversation.
-
The girls are trained to respond to "Hand Check" use it when you need to solicit the awareness of where people are, and looking to see who is on available on the furs.
We look forward to your visit, and hope you enjoy the atmosphere!

Men
A quick note on expectations - including operator status.
The Tavern recognizes the Gorean Philosophy is inherently patriarchal. This means we look for men of Gor to lead the community. Due to this we will offer operator status to every man who enters the channel.
The expectation is that you look to keep some very simple concepts which we would believe to be consistent across the community:
-
When you see behavior which you feel is detrimental to a positive sharing environment you speak up.
-
When you see abusive behavior of a woman or those owned, you warn to the point you feel it is necessary to remove them from the channel.
-
You treat all amicably despite the differences in views.
Obviously we are not asking you to do our work, or adopt any personal beliefs. The goal here is to see you as Goreans and those who will lead the community. That sense of leadership in our eyes means we need to afford you the opportunity to make change.
One finaly point on operator status. If you do not carry enough moral or Gorean compatibility to be given operator status in the Gorean Tavern as a man, then you do not bring with you the character or enough compatibility with your Gorean views to be an influence to our audience. In this instance you will be removed from accessing the channel, we do not bother keeping some list of those who should not have operator status. This point should be blatantly obvious.
Enforcing themes versus accepting them personally
Where there is a difference of opinion in views, it is appreciated when you enforce the concepts the Gorean Tavern has adopted. Again, this is not a requirement, however your participation in asking those who frequent to abide by any concepts adopted by the Gorean Tavern is appreciated. We think of this as respectful no matter where you spend your time.
One more point on this is that if I am at a friend's house who requires people who enter to take off their shoes. I would comment on that if people enter his house while he was not there to. That does not imply I wish that at my home. It is just a respectful recognition of his domain.
Women
Women in a patriarchal society
How does this all look and feel for a free woman? Where is the boundary between how a woman and a slave are treated? What voice can you expect to have in the Gorean Tavern?
These are all good questions. The Gorean Tavern is not misogynistic. This is exceptionally important to understand. When men expect a certain decorum of women it is not necessarily due to some latent misguided expression of misogyny.
The decorum expected of a woman is to keep aware that this community is governed by men, and your freedom to engage in conversation, join a channel, or even remain free are all examples of the will of men. Your ability for all of these are due to men not forcing the opposite. While there may be some channels on IRC which are goverened by women, it is the exception rather than the rule.
This does not mean we expect that you hold your tongue and never speak. We simply expect it to be done without the provocation of hostility. Be exceptionally aware of passsive aggressive behavior, and refrain from it as a way to emotionally manipulate those in the Gorean Tavern.
Your freedom, your submission, and a Gorean Tavern.
As mentioned your freedom is at the will of men. In the Gorean Tavern it will not be the frequent event that your freedom is in question. It is the will of the Gorean Tavern ownership to invite your presence to enjoy conversation and company without the fear of being put to unreasonable requests. Simply know when it is time to back off a conversation and concede that there may be a better time to present your views.
You are not required to act in a way which exhibits a dominant personality. You are not required to act in a way in which exhibits a submissive personality. You are expected that in either case it is respectful and your expressions are filled with class and character.
Owned
Entering / Parting the Tavern
It has been a custom of IRC Gor to require those owned to beg entrance and to part from a channel. In the Gorean Tavern you are simply required to ask permission for what could interrupt conversation, or part from the channel/conversations. This would include joining a conversation you were not invited to. It is simple enough to ask to join, and it is appropriate given your station.
Expectations of behavior
As someone owned, it is expected that you represent the expressions of your ownership. That your actions do not provoke the need to speak to your owner of your behavior. If something is asked of you which opposes the wishes of your owner, you are required to express that in a tone which is matter of fact. It is not appropriate to take your ownership's ruleset as a means to be a jackass.
As someone owned and frequenting the Gorean Tavern you can expect that men or women may message you. If you are privately messaged and you are not permitted to receive those at that time, simply express that in the private message. It is not appropriate to disrupt the conversation in the Gorean Tavern channel with this type of inconsequential information simply to call out some sense of self importance.
If you are being harassed or need the assistance of someone in the Gorean Tavern, then we request that you message first one of the free that are of the Tavern which you can find at the top menu of this site under "People". In the event that no one is present, then send a message to one of the men in the channel. If no man is present who could help, then message a woman who might be available to help offer advice. If none of these options are available, please feel free to leave the channel and avoid the abusive behavior based on the understanding that you have with your owner.
Silks, Serves, and Alcoves
The Gorean Tavern is a Tavern, however we do not interrupt the flow of conversation, and community by asking our property to consistently emote walking up to individuals unsolicited to request if they are in need. We are effective with this by asking our property to simply make note every so often that they are available.
Another trained response would be to the command, "Hand Check." When this is called, each and every property of the Gorean Tavern is required to offer a simple message explaining what their current circumstance is. You will get responses that some may be at the side of another man, or available for service. We expect those who are preoccupied and have their attentions with another in messaging to have that marked as in pm, and they may not respond.
Silk colors are not seen in the Gorean Tavern as some "belt system." This is not your dojo. The idea of silk colors is to help distinguish the girl for the resource she is to the free. This is about right fit, not some bastardized vision of the quality or importance of those owned. In the Gorean Tavern we do no have a tiered system or testing. We put girls in their right place as adequately as possible and help them grow within it from the start.
The one iconic understanding is that a pleasure slave is bred to be so. If there is property of the Gorean Tavern which is adorned with red silks, then you may assume she is available for your sexual expressions in the form of sexually driven chat.
Our objective is to create a list for each girl of the Gorean Tavern who is not adorned in red silks. This list will be an approved list of individuals that will be allowed to use that property in a manner which resembles a pleasure slave. They will be allowed to take that property to the alcoves. If you are not listed, they are not permitted to. If you would like to request to be added, then please see one of the men of the home. This will be qualified per Gorean Tavern property uniquely. So understand who and what you are asking, and let us know what you need. You may also send the request through the property of the Gorean Tavern which you have interest in.
